After spending a few years alongside students with disabilities, the question always arises: what now? The job of an AESH develops concrete skills in support, pedagogical adaptation, and daily school management. These skills open doors, but not necessarily the ones one might imagine at first glance.

Why the AESH CDI is not enough for career advancement

After six years of contract, an AESH can obtain a CDI from the National Education. This step reassures about job stability. However, it does not constitute a promotion.

The CDI does not create a progression framework or access to a public service body. In practical terms, pay increases little, responsibilities remain the same, and no specific internal competition is associated with the position. The SNE-CSEN clearly emphasizes this: to progress, one must aim for another certification, a competition, or a change of employer.

This is a point that many AESHs discover late. The CDI secures the contractual relationship, but it does not replace a professionally developed evolution project. You can browse Job Clic’s resources to identify the pathways accessible from your current situation.

Transferable skills from an AESH to the medico-social sector

Before discussing diplomas or training, let’s look at what you already know how to do. An AESH supports a student in their learning, adapts instructions, manages crisis situations, collaborates with teachers and families. These are relational and educational skills that are directly valuable.

Let’s take a simple example. During a class activity, you rephrase an instruction for a student who does not understand the initial statement. This action, repeated hundreds of times, technically corresponds to individualized pedagogical adaptation. This is exactly what a specialized educator or an educational and social support worker mobilizes in another context.

Here are the most directly reusable skills:

  • Fine observation of the behaviors and needs of a person with a disability, including during the midday break since law n° 2024-475 of May 27, 2024
  • The ability to work in a multidisciplinary team (teachers, reference AESHs, school psychologists, families)
  • Management of emergency or behavioral crisis situations, with a non-punitive response framework
  • Writing support reports and participating in follow-up meetings (PPS, educational teams)

These skills cover a large part of the frameworks of the DEAES and the diploma of educational assistant. Going through a VAE (validation of acquired experience) allows them to be officially recognized without undergoing complete training again.

DEAES and VAE: two concrete pathways to change diplomas

The DEAES (State diploma of educational and social support) is the certification closest to the daily life of an AESH. It can be prepared through initial training or via VAE, and it opens access to positions in medico-social establishments, reception structures, and home assistance.

Why is this pathway relevant? Because the VAE directly values the field experience gained as an AESH. You are not learning a new profession: you are certifying the one you are already practicing, in a framework recognized by the State.

The process unfolds in several stages. You prepare a receivability booklet, then a detailed file of your activities. A jury evaluates the correspondence between your experience and the framework of the targeted diploma. If the jury partially validates, you complete with targeted training modules.

The other common option is through the educational assistant competition. This diploma at the baccalaureate level requires longer training but provides access to better-paid positions and a more stable status in the social sector. Funding can mobilize the CPF, which reduces the out-of-pocket expenses for AESHs in position.

Law of May 27, 2024: what changes for work quotas

A recent element deserves your attention. Law n° 2024-475 of May 27, 2024, provides that the State takes charge of the human support for students with disabilities during the midday break. Until now, this time was the responsibility of local authorities, which created disruptions in support and fragmented contracts.

This evolution may change the work quotas of AESHs. A position that previously covered only school time may now include midday time, making some contracts more continuous. Higher work quotas also mean better-funded CPF and training rights.

However, the Senate noted in 2025 that the implementing decree had not yet been published. Therefore, the concrete implementation depends on each academy. If you are considering long training (DEAES, educational assistant, nursing assistant), check with your employer if your quota has been reassessed.

Building a career development path from an AESH position

The professional interview, mandatory at least every three years, is the time planned to formalize a project. Prepare it with concrete elements: acquired skills, training completed, targeted profession.

  • Identify the target diploma (DEAES, nursing assistant diploma, public service competition) based on the sector that attracts you
  • Check the eligibility of the training for CPF and inquire about professional training leave arrangements
  • Request VAE support if you have several years of experience in supporting people with disabilities

The most common mistake is to wait for the CDI to think about the next steps. The first years of fixed-term contracts are precisely the time when you accumulate experience that is valuable for VAE. Each year of support counts in the file.

The job of an AESH is not a professional dead end. It is a foundation of skills in educational and social support that, once certified by the right diploma, provides access to more stable and better-recognized positions in the medico-social sector.
